More Ways To Get A Free Credit Report

The Fair Credit Reporting Act provides that the three major credit bureaus must provide you with a free copy of your credit report from their bureau:

If any adverse action has been taken as a result of information included in your credit report. Adverse actions would include being denied for credit, employment or housing or receiving a higher insurance rate.
After placing a fraud alert on your credit reports or any other actions as a result of being a victim of identity theft.
After disputing inaccurate information included on your report.
If you are on welfare or unemployed and are actively searching for employment.
Check Your Report Often
If you do not check on your credit report often you may have someone else's bad debt on your credit report. This happens more than you would believe. In fact statistics show that 2 out of 3 credit reports contain errors including public records, incorrect address and incorrect credit accounts. Don't be like most people who find out about a negative item on their credit report when they most need the credit they are applying for.

Removing Negative Items
You have heard it before "we can remove this or that from your credit report." Here is the truth. There is nobody who can remove negative information from your credit report if the information is timely and accurate. The credit bureaus will only remove negative information from your credit report for one of two reasons. Either the negative item on your credit report is  a mistake or the negative item has been on your credit report longer than the law allows. The statute of limitations for most negative information on a credit report is 7 years and ten for a bankruptcy. The credit reporting bureaus are not obligated to change this information if it is a legitimate entry. If the maximum time frame established by the FTC has expired or the negative item is not yours dispute it. However, if the item is legitimate the negative entry is going to stay on your report.
What is a Credit Reporting Agency
The consumer credit reporting agencies are privately held companies that collect credit information on U.S. consumers and generate reports based on that data. The 3 major credit reporting agencies are Equifax, Trans Union and Experian. Their report summarizes your credit history. The credit reports that they generate are used by creditors whenever you apply for financing. Each of the 3 credit reporting agencies generates their own report. So everyone has three separate credit reports. A lender will use these reports to get a rounded view of your credit history and what kind of risk you may pose.
Personal Information

Credit reports contain all your personal information. You will find your social security number, date of birth, old addresses, telephone numbers, work history, and all sorts of other information even your spouse. It is imperative that you keep your information accurate because your credit is one of your most important assets. Sometimes you will find personal information that is incorrect. Contact the reporting agency and have your information corrected if you find any discrepancies.
